How Do You Feel? A Collaborative Back-to-School Game

Students participating in back to school games
In my previous post, I explained how to use the Frayer model as a way for students to get to know each other, and discover how much more they have in common than not.  You can read about that here.

Another game that will get students talking and learning about their commonalities is one I call How Do You Feel?

To play this game, you need a list of prompts (they could be words or pictures).  You could call them out or put them up on your Activboard or Smartboard.
  • Tell students that as you call out or show them a word or phrase, their job is to line up from one corner of the room to the other
  • Designate the two corners for "this is awful" and "this is amazing"
  • As students line up along the continuum, they discover those around them who feel similarly, and those who don't
  • It's also a great way for you to learn about your class as they discuss their opinions

Why Play These Kinds of Games?

There is an important underlying message with this activity.  Every student's opinion counts.  And, if guided well, students learn to listen to and respect the opinions of their classmates.  There are some teachable moments here also.

  • Teach your students how you get their attention and how they should respond
  • Teach them what active listening looks like

If you like these kinds of activities, I have 8 other ones in this Back to School product on TpT.

With a grateful heart,
